Older Peoples Forum
A voice for older people in the Harrogate District?
Harrogate & Area CVS has been asked to help set up a forum for older people in the Harrogate District. So that we could find out more from older people themselves about whether they would be interested in this idea we produced a short survey
A big thank you to everyone who completed the survey and helped to circulate and distribute to their groups. The closing date for the survey was 29 February 2012.
We have now pulled together all the responses and we reported back on the survey results at the planning meeting on Monday 19 March. A very interesting discussion took place about how best to move forward and any issues and barriers to participation that existed and the ways to overcome these.
A meeting was held on 23 April with the trustees of the North Yorkshire Forum for Older People (NYFFOP) when they gave us feedback on our report on the first six months of work on the project to explore the setting up of an Older People’s Forum in the Harrogate District.
They were pleased with what has been achieved, particularly the consultation work. Taking this into account, together with their own work programme (agreed with North Yorkshire County Council) they have now asked us to go ahead and arrange a Harrogate District Older People’s Voice event, with a view to formally setting up a District Forum. This will take place in July and we hope that a number of Trustees of the North Yorkshire Forum for Older People will be able to come along to talk about their local forums, how they feed into decision making processes, what work they have been doing and what successes they have had. The event will be a mixture of formal with the speakers from NYFFOP as well as a chance for a get together and socialise, perhaps with some entertainment as well.

Background information
The Older People’s Reference Group, funded by NHS North Yorkshire & York came to an end in October 2011. From this group a separate opportunity arose to develop a Harrogate District Older People’s Forum. HACVS has secured funding for one year from the North Yorkshire Forum for Older People for this work, which is being undertaken by Christine Boxall (development support) and Angela Jones (secretariat for the group).
