Keyfund Training - Community Member and Facilitator Training

What is Keyfund? North Yorkshire County Council's Youth Support Service work in partnership with Keyfund to invest in young peoples ideas. Groups plan, design and deliver their own projects. They build confidence, self-esteem and develop our 12 Keyfund skills. Through Keyfund, young people learn by doing. They experience first hand how effort can reap rewards and what it feels like to succeed.

ACTIVELY INVOLVING CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE PROJECT (AICYPP)

The AICYPP project has now come to an end and the final report on project was presented to the Harrogate District Strategic Partnership on 15th June 2011. This report will be available on the website for reference until the end of March 2012. For any further information contact Fiona Friday at fiona.friday@harrogate.gov.uk.

Thanks to everyone who has played any part in this valuable project.

“To improve the engagement of all children and young people in the provision of public services in the Harrogate District”

The AICYP Partnership celebrated the culmination of their hard work with a Showcase event on Wednesday 16 March 2011 in the Council Chamber at Harrogate Borough Council. As this is the final year of the AICYP Project, the Steering Group wanted to share the story of the Project and it’s successes. It was also a rare treat to see the 5 Mayors and Mayoresses of Harrogate, Ripon, Knaresborough, Pateley Bridge and Boroughbridge attend the event along with a number of other special guests from the Council, AICYPP network, Steering Group and Teachers.  The guests were treated to presentations from the groups of enthusiastic children and young people who had received grants for a variety of projects.

Mayors of the District listening to the presentations
The Partnership had chosen 8 projects that employed creative ways of involving children and young people aged 0-19 in local projects.  The Showcase event was an opportunity for the projects in receipt of funding to show what they have achieved:
Boroughbridge High School
A project to encourage everyone in the school to reduce their carbon footprint by giving students a Low Carbon Passport, a step by step guide with information and resources, where students can record their progress in reducing their carbon footprint.  Funding will also provide energy monitors as a resource to the school available to be borrowed through the School Library.
Grove Road School Eco Group
A project to form a school eco group to help the environment to make the school greener and to save money. The project includes recycling materials in school, a walk to school day, poster competition, classroom light monitors, a school assembly on saving the planet, growing their own vegetables at school, collecting rain to water plants, using waste food to make compost, looking at how much electricity is used in school & a recycle day where students bring items from home that can be recycled.
St John Fisher School
Cycle to recycle project, improving security and facilities for students to enable them to cycle to school.  The project will also allow for the purchase of recycling bins, carry out a fund raising event and produce a promotional video to encourage fellow students and the local community to recycle more.
Harrogate District Youth Council
A training event for Harrogate District Youth Councils, creating an opportunity for youth Councillors to meet up, share ideas, learn new skills and undertake training to enhance their roles as youth councillors.  The funding will pay for training workshops in a variety of topics including:  Social media, Public relations, meeting management and councillor conduct.
Boroughbridge Youth Council
A new youth shelter for Boroughbridge.  The existing shelter is in bad condition, rarely used and did not suit the needs of the young people of Boroughbridge.  The Youth Council secured funding from a local business and also carried out fundraising events.  Funding will allow for a new youth shelter that will also be available to families during community events.

Young Carers and Families
Two arts and crafts days for young and sibling carers aged 7-11 and 11+ conducted by ‘Art from the Heart’.
Bounce
A Starbeck Children’s Centre Project. A bouncy castle session for children aged 3-10 years with autism and challenging behaviour. The project was formulated following consultation with parent and key workers and from observation of young people enjoying themselves and experience from such activities with older children.

Purple Patch Arts
A 10 week dance project ‘Make us Move’ for 12 children and young people with learning disabilities in Harrogate.

The event concluded with a speech from Will Lockwood on the North Yorkshire Youth Council and the Mayor of Harrogate, Bill Hoult congratulating all the participants for their hard work on the creative projects that they undertook.

The notes of the Network meeting held on 8 December 2010 at Harrogate Library are available here  We had an interesting meeting with some new faces joining us, and updates from various colleagues on the changes and challenges we all face in 2011.

Two documents were circulated at the meeting which help explain:

how the AICYPP project was set up (history and review to date)

how it has worked (a diagram)

------------------------------------

Background/ History

The Actively Involving Children and Young People Project (AICYPP) was set up in late 2007 to support all local organisations wishing to improve the involvement of children and young people in the shaping and delivery of public services in the District.

It is a multi-agency partnership project, funded by Harrogate Borough Council and NYCC Children and Young People’s Service in Year 1, with North Yorkshire Police and the Harrogate District Safer Communities Partnership joining the original funding partners for Year 2 (2009/10). The project is endorsed by the Harrogate District Strategic Partnership.

The main way in which the project promotes the active involvement of children and young people is to support the AICYPP Network, which brings together people from a wide range of local organisations with an interest in this type of work (around 115 members at present). Harrogate and Area CVS co-ordinate the Network Meetings and database.

Via the Network we aim to share good practice, celebrate success and provide practical support on participation skills and techniques for public and VCS organisations seeking to involve children and young people in the development of services. Training activity is organised by North Yorkshire Youth, who are key partners in the project.

A  Steering Group supports the Partnership, made up of reps from the funders, together with NYCC 4Youth and Harrogate Hospital Foundation Trust. The Steering Group’s role is to monitor and evaluate the success of the project and to secure further funding for future activity.

The Project is also working with NYCC 4Youth to support the roll out of Youth Councils in the Harrogate District and to link with developments across North Yorkshire in this area of work
